About the Center

Rooted in the mission of the 爆料公社. Thomas and inspired by Catholic social teaching, the Center for the Common Good exists to ignite a lifelong commitment to civic agency, ethical leadership, and the pursuit of justice. We serve as a dynamic hub that connects students, faculty, staff, and community partners through curricular and co-curricular opportunities that foster social responsibility and advance the common good. Established in 2017 as a strategic response to the university’s call for deeper community engagement, the Center was born out of a two-year dialogue with internal and external stakeholders seeking to align institutional mission with community priorities.

Today, we support and lead initiatives that address real-world challenges—ranging from food insecurity and environmental justice to civic engagement and global solidarity—through volunteerism, advocacy, public scholarship, and community-based research. We hold that authentic partnerships, especially those that amplify the voices of historically underrepresented communities, are essential to meaningful and sustainable change. At our core, we believe that education is not only about personal transformation, but about preparing individuals to be bold, compassionate changemakers who understand their power and responsibility to serve the common good—locally and globally.

How We Work

We integrate community engagement into the fabric of life at St. Thomas by connecting students, faculty, and staff with opportunities to learn with and from our community partners, research complex social issues, and contribute to collective solutions.

We do this through four primary initiatives:

  1. Tommies Together Volunteer Center connects students and the whole St. Thomas community with co-curricular volunteer and learning opportunities in collaboration with community partners.
  2. Academic Community Engagement connects faculty and students with curricular opportunities in collaboration with community partners.
  3. Changemaking for the Common Good connects the students and the whole St. Thomas community with informed and collaborative solution-based initiatives addressing social, civic and environmental challenges.
  4. VISION for the Common Good connects students and the St. Thomas community with immersive, justice-centered experiences that foster reflection, solidarity, and action in response to social and environmental challenges.

We use to help St. Thomas community members discover unique engagement opportunities at St. Thomas and log their community engagement hours.
